McDowell's Army

Assistant Adjutant General & Brevet Major I McDowell, United States Army, was appointed brigadier general, United States Army, by General Orders No.64, Paragraph I, War Department, Adjutant General's Office, Washington, D. C., on 22 August, 1861, dated 14 May, 1861, and was assigned to command the Department of Northeastern Virginia, at Arlington House/ Lee-Custis Mansion, Alexandria County, Virginia, by General Orders No.26, War Department, Adjutant General's Office, Washington, D. C., on 27 May, 1861. McDowell's Army was organised by General Orders No.13, Headquarters, Department of Northeastern Virginia, Arlington, Alexandria County, Virginia, on 8 July, 1861 (See the Orders of Battle, McDowell's Army).

Army of the Potomac

Superintendent P G T Beauregard, United States Military Academy, resigned on 28 January, 1861, and was appointed brigadier general, Confederate States Army, at Montgomery, Montgomery County, Alabama, on 1 March, 1861. Brigadier General P G T Beauregard, Confederate States Army, was assigned to command the Department of Alexandria by Major General R E Lee, Provisional Army of Virginia, at Spotswood Hotel, southeast corner of Main and Eighth Streets, Richmond, Henrico County, Virginia, on 31 May, 1861, and arrived by the Orange & Alexandria Railroad at Camp Pickens, Prince William County, Manassas Junction, Prince William County, Virginia, at 2 PM on 2 June, 1861. The Army of the Potomac was organised by General Orders No.20, Headquarters, Army of the Potomac, Camp Pickens, Prince William County, Manassas Junction, Prince William County, Virginia, on 20 June, 1861 (See the Orders of Battle, Army of the Potomac).

Army of the Shenandoah

Brigadier General J E Johnston, Confederate States Army, was assigned to command Harpers Ferry, Jefferson County, Virginia, on 15 May, 1861, and arrived at 1 PM on 23 May, 1861. The Army of the Shenandoah was organised at Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia, on 17 June, 1861 (See the Orders of Battle, Army of the Shenandoah).

Army of Pennsylvania
