NOTE: On 9 July, 1861, telegrams were sent to Major General L Polk and Brigadier General C Clark, asking that the 12th Mississippi Infantry to be sent to Lynchburg without delay. The regiment started on 16 July, and did not arrive in time for the battle of Manassas.
On 25 July 1861, the Army of the Potomac was reorganised and the 12th Mississippi Infantry was assigned to the Second Brigade, First Corps, Army of the Potomac, under the command of Brigadier General R S Ewell.
