South Carolina's Military Organisations During the War Between the States, The Upstate, by R S Seigler
NOTE: The Calhoun Light Artillery was the first artillery company accepted in state service on 30 December, 1860, under the command of Captain W R Calhoun. The company was assigned to the 1st South Carolina Artillery, Company A, on 28 January 1861. After the surrender of Fort Sumter, Captain W R Calhoun equipped Company A as a battery of light artillery and left for Virginia on 24 June. The company was attached to the 4th South Carolina Infantry, Third Brigade, First Corps, Army of the Potomac, from August to December 1861. Two of the six guns were temporarily assigned to the Star Battery under the command of First Lieutenant F G Latham, Company G, 5th South Carolina Infantry. Captain W R Calhoun returned to Virginia in November 1861 and was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the 1st Battalion, South Carolina Artillery (Regulars), with the battery returning to Charlston on 1 January, 1862, under the command of Captain W C Preston.
